Affectionately named The Chalet, this sweet weekend retreat was ready for a little outdoor make over and redesign in the Spring of 2023. After a thorough going through of the front beds which had become over-run with wild raspberry, virginia creeper and other such opportunists, it was time to make a few edits and additions. We drafted a design with the goal of elevating the appearance of entryway and back patio area. Clean lines and simple plantings to provide increased privacy and elegance while remaining low maintenance. Mielke Landscaping & Construction came in to pull out some of the larger shrubs, level and re-gravel the driveway and replace the old brick path and patio with blue stone, giving them both a more modern look.
In the backyard we took the existing round bed near the fire pit area which was mostly overtaken by volunteer elms and bittersweet, and created a kind of meadow in miniature. By elongating the bed on both sides to hug the the fire pit, these once competing circles could now be in harmony and offer a sense of context to the otherwise open space. The bed was planted with a mix of grasses and perennials primarily native to our area; a nod to the wild meadow while remaining manageable.
